Spreading Ubuntu – Building Bridges of Peace from Sweden to Africa

Introduction:

Svalorna Afrika Sweden is proud to support and collaborate with the Ubuntu movement, a peaceful African philosophy deeply rooted in humanity, interconnectedness, and dignity. Through its partnership with MOV-HUMANA, a CEEDECO program active in the DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda, Svalorna Afrika aims to extend Ubuntu’s powerful principles to the African diaspora in Sweden. This effort will foster a sense of belonging, peacebuilding, and social cohesion locally, while also strengthening peace and justice initiatives in the countries of origin.

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a Southern African philosophy emphasizing human dignity, compassion, mutual respect, and communal harmony. The essence of Ubuntu is captured in the phrase:

"I am because we are"

It promotes peace, non-violence, social justice, and reconciliation through dialogue and mutual understanding. It’s a way of life that transcends religion, ethnicity, and political beliefs.

Advantages of Applying Ubuntu in Sweden (for the African Diaspora):

  • Fostering Unity and Identity:
    - Helps diaspora communities reconnect with their cultural roots and identity.
    - Encourages intra-diaspora solidarity across national and ethnic lines (e.g., Rwandans, Burundians,       Congolese united in Ubuntu).

  • Reducing Social Isolation and Marginalization:
    - Promotes a sense of belonging and collective responsibility.
    - Encourages inclusion and mutual support among African immigrants and Swedes.

  • Conflict Resolution and Dialogue:
    - Ubuntu offers tools for resolving interpersonal and community-level conflicts peacefully.
    - Can help in de-escalating tensions within diaspora groups or with the broader society.

  • Empowering Youth and Building Role Models:
    - Encourages youth leadership rooted in values like empathy, respect, and responsibility.
    - Counters negative narratives with positive identity formation and ethical leadership.

    • Promoting Mental and Social Wellbeing:

      - A culture of community care supports emotional resilience and mental health.
      - Restorative practices can reduce trauma linked to migration, war, and displacement.

    • Building Bridges with Swedish Society:

      - Ubuntu’s universal values resonate with Sweden’s human rights and peace-focused ideals.
      - Can foster meaningful intercultural dialogue and community engagement.

Impact in Countries of Origin (DRC, Rwanda, Burundi):

    • Sustaining Peacebuilding Efforts:

      - Diaspora communities become peace ambassadors, supporting reconciliation at home.
      - Promotes healing in post-conflict societies through Ubuntu-centered dialogue.

    • Transnational Solidarity and Development:

      - Encourages diaspora-led initiatives rooted in justice, equity, and community welfare.
      - Supports grassroots organizations and youth movements in peace work.

    • Countering Extremism and Division:

      - Ubuntu promotes forgiveness, healing, and community over division and revenge.
      - Can mitigate ethnic, political, or generational divides.

    • Creating a Global Ubuntu Network:

      - A transnational network of “Ubuntuists” can influence policy, education, and civil society.
      - Ubuntu becomes a shared ethical foundation for peace advocacy globally.

    Vision for the Future:

With Ubuntu as a guiding philosophy, Svalorna Afrika envisions a growing network of diaspora communities in Sweden that:

    • Live and promote peace,
    • Advocate for justice at home and abroad,
    • Act as connectors between the Global South and North in shared struggles for dignity and human rights.

Ubuntu is not just a philosophy — it is a practice of living peace, and in this shared journey, both Sweden and African nations can benefit profoundly.

    Conclusion:

By spreading Ubuntu within the African diaspora in Sweden, and reinforcing it in collaboration with partners like MOV-HUMANA in Central Africa, Svalorna Afrika aims to contribute to a world where peace, justice, and solidarity are not abstract ideals but lived realities.

"Ubuntu reminds us that our humanity is tied to the humanity of others — and through that, we find peace, purpose, and progress."
